These places are good to visit, but don’t feature in these maps. Track your own path!
Murano
This industrial glass-making centre has plenty of things to see. It has its own version of the Grand Canal. Just a short Vaporetto journey.
Burano
A little further afield. Charming and colourful.
Torcello
A little further afield – one of the first areas to be settled on the lagoon.
Lido
The Tempio Votivo della Pace di Venezia becons as you look across from Riva degli Schiavoni. The Adriatic Sea is beyond. The island has its own fascinating history, including a place in literary history through Thomas Mann’s (1912) ‘Death in Venice’ novella.
(More) Other Islands
San Giorgio Maggiore (left) features in many of the iconic images of Venice.
There are other islands such as San Lazzaro (a haven for the Armenians) and the cemetery island of San Michele (image at top of page).
Each of these islands is worthy of a visit, but won’t yield lengthy walks for those keen to stretch their legs!
