The selection below includes many excellent blogs and web sites that provide insights into the cultural, artistic, architectural and historic aspects of this magnificant city.  There are also alternative sources for guided walks or maps from travellers!

Conoscere Venezia. An excellent selection of local stories and historical articles relating to Venice, supported with a set of online maps.  Look for:  the interesting collection of antique maps.

 

Images of Venice.  Wide-reaching blog that offers insights into a variety of cultural and historical aspects of the city.  Excellent photography and accessible explanations of things like the Doges, the architecture, and the wells around the city.


Seductive Venice. A long-standing and detailed blog about the city.


The Churches of Venice.  A comprehensive record of the churches

of Venice with images and notes.   As far as I can see, this is the most comprehensive resource of its kind on the internet.


Where Venice.  Glossy magazine with current events and suggestions for visitors.  Look for: good lists of great places to visit supported by photos and stories.


Visit Venice.  Official guide website.


The Bridges of Venice.  A blog dedicated to the bridges of Venice.


A lover of Venice.  Excellent blog and web page. Try the ‘let’s play’.  This page is the next best thing to a local guide with a personalised tour.


Chorus Venezia.  A collection of churches dedicated to accessing their collections and seasonal events (discount tickets).


Bacari tour.  An excellent collection of bacari by district.


Rossi WritesHidden Gems in Venice.  A detailed and comprehensive review that also provides an excellent companion guide to local names, customs, and culture, even down to architectural details on buildings and bridges.  Look for: the clever image taken through an opening of the clock tower on St Mark’s Piazza across the front of the Basilica and Doge’s Palace.


Travilmad‘s ‘Self-guided off the beaten track tour.  An excellent itinerary through parts of San Marco, San Polo and Dorsoduro.  Includes an interactive walking map similar to my own (see here).


What if we walked?  A travelling couple set out to travel the world the slow way, exploring the world on foot.  Their 3-day itinerary in Venice is a great mix of culture, food and fun.
