about dorsoduro

One of the larger districts of the city, Dorsoduro is home to the city’s premier art gallery, the Accademia It is also home to some lesser-known artistic and cultural treasures.  With the decline of the Republic around the 1600’s, the area around San Barnaba was home to the ‘Barnabotti’.  Pompeo Molmenti describes them as: ‘a body of indulgent nobles … without income of any kind … who formed a venal and disorderly group in the Great Council’.
